William Debattista was born on 2 nd February 1974 to Carmelo and Rita Debattista and is from Rabat, his hometown to date. He started clarinet lessons at the age of 8 at L’Isle Adam Band Club under the tuition of Mr Tony Galea and finally made his debut in 1986 when 12 years old. Later on he continued his studies under the teaching of renowned Maltese clarinettist Prof Freddie Mizzi where he got his LLCM and established himself as a soloist in the band community around the island. In the meantime he started music theory lessons with Dr Charles Zammit achieving grade examinations of several boards such as Royal Schools, Lancashire and London College of Music. Then he continued theory lessons with the late Mro Ronnie Debattista where he obtained the Licentiate Diploma in 2002. During this time he caught the attention of the 12 th May Band of Żebbuġ and St. Mary Band Club of Dingli which respectively appointed him as a woodwind and theory instructor in 1997. By 1998 this role was also given by his hometown band L’Isle Adam and in 1999 he was appointed as a woodwind instructor by the Sliema Band. Furthermore he was appointed as Asst. Conductor of St. Mary Band in 1998 and 12 th May Band in 2007. In June 2019 he was appointed Conductor of his hometown band L’Isle Adam, 33 years after his debut, which time he served as a librarian and as band delegate and committee member. He is married to Gloriann and have two sons Andre, 16, who also plays the clarinet, and Jerome, 12.
